My Treadmill Goes to Starbucks

In my recent trip to New York, I developed a morning routine of walking to a local coffee shop to do my morning journaling.

Writing my morning pages is one of the longest lasting practices I have. It was a treat in New York to do this in some local coffee place. I wrote in a Starbucks twice, a shop called the Bean, and in one called Kona Roasters.

Each day, I’d get up and put on my clothes and head out to do this work. I enjoyed this morning walk. I found this 10-12 minute roundtrip resulted in me getting 3,000 steps first thing in the morning. It was a great way to start the day. Writing and exercising. A great combination.

But what would I do when I got home?

I wouldn’t have to walk down the block for coffee. I could just walk down the hall to my office and do it there.

I came up with a creative solution that brings the New York experience home.

I discovered that my treadmill goes to Starbucks.

I realized I can still include some morning exercise before and after my journaling. I have a treadmill at home, so I can walk for 10 minutes on that. I have an exercise bike in my office, so I can ride that before and after the morning pages practice. That’s what I did this morning.

So I’ve discovered that if you’re creative, you can always find a way to recreate a fun experience.
